When Your Child Keeps Interrupting

Why Kids Interrupt

Constant interrupting can feel rude, but it is usually not intentional disrespect. Young children interrupt because they have something exciting to say and no impulse control yet. Older children may interrupt because they feel unheard or because the conversation feels too long.

What You Can Try

Teach a signal. Some families use a gentle hand on the arm to mean "I have something to say." The parent can then put their hand on the child's to mean "I see you. I'll get to you in a moment."

This gives the child a way to communicate without shouting over everyone.

What You Can Say

"I want to hear you. Let me finish this sentence, and then it's your turn."

"I see your hand. Give me 10 seconds."

Then follow through. When it is their turn, give them your full attention. This teaches patience and reward.

Practice at Home

At dinner, try a round where everyone shares one thing. This teaches turn-taking in a low-pressure setting. Praise the effort: "You waited your turn — that was really respectful."
